ROOTS STEM Day Welcomes Refugee Students to The Bishop’s School

LA JOLLA, CA — Refugee students visited The Bishop’s School on March 15 for a ROOTS STEM Day combining science, creativity, recreation, and campus exploration.

Participants toured the school’s science laboratories and Creative Center, giving them an opportunity to see spaces where Bishop’s students regularly experiment, design, build, and create. ROOTS volunteers also organized hands-on crafts and interactive activities throughout the day.

The program extended beyond laboratory learning. Students joined ROOTS volunteers for beach ball games and recreational activities, creating a balance between structured exploration and informal time together.

ROOTS STEM Days complement the organization’s annual summer camps by providing educational opportunities throughout the school year. Regular gatherings allow volunteers and refugee students to reconnect, build relationships over time, and continue exploring science and creativity in different settings.

About ROOTS

ROOTS, the Refugee Children’s Organization for Tech and Science, is a youth-led volunteer organization dedicated to expanding access to STEM education and enrichment opportunities for refugee children in San Diego. Through partnerships with refugee-serving organizations, schools, universities, and community institutions, ROOTS organizes free STEM camps, STEM Days, educational field trips, book drives, benefit concerts, and other programs designed to build curiosity, confidence, friendship, and community among young learners.
