SAN DIEGO — ROOTS brought together more than 60 young performers and more than 250 audience members on November 8 for the second annual Refugee Youth Benefit Concert at Good Samaritan Episcopal Church, raising more than $8,000 for programs serving refugee children and families.
Young musicians from schools, orchestras, ensembles, and music programs throughout San Diego volunteered their talents for the concert. Performers ranged from young children to high school, college, and graduate-level musicians, creating a broad youth-for-youth community program.
Organizing an event of this scale required ROOTS volunteers to recruit performers, coordinate musicians and groups that do not normally appear on the same program, arrange schedules and venue logistics, communicate with families, and bring supporters from throughout the community together around a shared cause.
Across the first two annual concerts, ROOTS recruited more than 100 performers from six local high schools and UC San Diego, attracted more than 400 audience members, and raised more than $10,000 for refugee youth education. The growth of the concert showed what can happen when young musicians, families, schools, and community organizations come together around the same purpose.
