ROOTS Giving Tree Helps Fulfill Holiday Wishes for Refugee Children

LA JOLLA, Calif. — ROOTS joined members of The Bishop’s School community during the holiday season to collect gifts for refugee children and families served by local refugee organizations.

Donations were collected through the Bishop’s community, including at the school dining hall and Christmas Tree Lighting activities. Students, parents, faculty, and staff were invited to help fulfill holiday wishes for children whose families were rebuilding their lives in San Diego.

ROOTS volunteers helped collect, organize, sort, and prepare the gifts for distribution. More than 200 gifts were gathered through the broader holiday effort, giving members of the Bishop’s community an opportunity to provide something personal and meaningful to individual children.

Although ROOTS is best known for STEM education, the Giving Tree reflects the broader relationships the organization has developed with refugee families. Supporting young people means caring about their experiences beyond the classroom, and the holiday drive offered another way for volunteers and the larger school community to demonstrate that commitment.

About ROOTS

ROOTS, the Refugee Children’s Organization for Tech and Science, is a youth-led volunteer organization dedicated to expanding access to STEM education and enrichment opportunities for refugee children in San Diego. Through partnerships with refugee-serving organizations, schools, universities, and community institutions, ROOTS organizes free STEM camps, STEM Days, educational field trips, book drives, benefit concerts, and other programs designed to build curiosity, confidence, friendship, and community among young learners.
