LA JOLLA, Calif. — ROOTS launched a STEM Book Drive at The Bishop’s School to collect science-focused books for refugee children and youth in San Diego. Students, parents, faculty, and other members of the Bishop’s community were invited to donate books covering topics including biology, chemistry, engineering, technology, mathematics, space, and the natural sciences.

More than 100 books were collected through the effort and provided to refugee students through ROOTS’ community partners. The books gave young readers additional opportunities to explore science outside organized classes and summer programs.

For ROOTS, the drive reflected the belief that curiosity does not begin and end in a classroom. A book about animals, planets, machines, medicine, or engineering can sometimes be the first step toward a much deeper interest. The project also gave the wider Bishop’s community an easy and meaningful way to participate in ROOTS’ mission of expanding educational opportunities for refugee youth.
